While we did know that a PS5 and Xbox Series X version was on the cards, there was no indication whatsoever that it would be landing today. Up until very recently, there had not even been an official announcement from publisher Electronic Arts (EA), who have instead been busy promoting their dodgeball-themed esport, Knockout City.
This is the second big patch to arrive for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in 2021, after an update in January optimised the game to run at a higher frame rate.
How to Qualify for the Free Next-gen Upgrade
Much like with this week’s Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade update, you will be eligible to claim the new versions of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order for free, provided that you already own the original.
There are a few caveats to this. For a start, you will not qualify for the Xbox Series X version of the update if you originally purchased the game for a Sony platform. Likewise, if you want the free PS5 version of Fallen Order, then you must have previously owned it on a PS4.
That might sound obvious, but things do get a little more complicated when you factor physical media into the equation. If you have a PS4 copy of Fallen Order on disc but only have a digital edition PS5, then you will not be able to claim a free upgrade directly.
Instead, you will have to contact EA support and attempt to validate your original purchase through them. Instructions on how to do this can be found at EA.com.
How to Download the New Version of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
If you do qualify for the free upgrade, then it is fairly straightforward to activate. For those who own the game on disc, simply insert that into your console and then you will immediately be prompted to download the update. Next to the option to purchase the game will be a button that says ‘“Free.”
If you originally purchased a digital version of Fallen Order, and you have stayed within the same console brand, then all you need to do is navigate to the game’s product page on the relevant storefront. Where there would normally be an option to purchase the release, there will now be a button that says “Free’”. This will let you download the upgrade.
Finally, if you have never owned Fallen Order in any capacity, or you have switched between console brands, then you will still be able to play the PS5 or Xbox Series X version, although you will have to pay full price.
One last thing that is worth noting is that the standard edition of Fallen Order is currently featured in the EA Play library. This means that “Xbox Game Pass Ultimate” subscribers can download it for free and will subsequently be entitled to the next-gen update as well.
